• Integra LifeSciences

Working as a Service and Repair Technician at Integra LifeSciences has been an amazing experience where I learned about the medical device industry. Being hands on with devices such as intracranial pressure monitors, ultrasonic tissue ablations systems and brain tissue oxygen monitors has instilled within me a greater understanding of the surgical care world.

    Areas of Experience

Responding to work orders for preventative and corrective maintenance actions.

Operated Industry standard software and testing equipment to complete device specific testing protocols.

Participated in quality and engineering audits to verify company procedural and documentation practice.

Provided in-person device service training to in house and overseas colleagues.

Planned a interactive device training module in collaboration with Mixed Reality using Oculus VR Headset.

Restructured inventory management using sub-inventories containing highest priority replacement parts.

Executed industry quality standards for service and repair procedures and correlating documentation.

Parts inventory management including quantity of parts, parts ordering and numerical identification systems.

  • Cincinnati VA Medical Center

Spending time at the Veterans Hospital was extremely rewarding. It was very valuable to work alongside doctors and nurses and understand the struggles and needs in regard to medical devices. Hearing information from the end user and then combining that with current knowledge of the product, I was able to fully understand the medical device design process.

    Areas of Experience:

Completing monthly preventative maintenance work orders on devices such as temporal thermometers, Alaris IV pumps, ECG machines, etc.

Responded to corrective maintenance work orders on Cannon, Phillips, GE, and Siemens X-ray and CT equipment suites to repair and replace positioning, sizing and configurational setups.

Exposure to X-ray and CT testing to confirm proper function and safe exposure levels

Used X-ray test phantoms to calibrate and collect data on exposure areas and X-ray tube accuracy

Training on X-ray and CT safety including shielding procedures, leakage levels and exposure limits

Re-structured the biomedical engineering departments out of order device turn in protocol to increase efficiency and organization.

Identified and corrected inconsistencies in the departments incoming inspection process involving visual and electrical safety testing.

Physical and electronic documentation control including work order, calibration and part inventory reports.

  • Ferno Washington Inc.

As a member of the Emergency Medical Systems Division, I helped to design and develop equipment such as chair lifts, electrical emergency power cots and ambulance storage systems. Working at Ferno enabled me to build upon the product development and design processes.

    Areas of Experience:

Formulated usability functions on component level parts to understand user operational tendencies.

Brainstormed use scenarios to identify design improvements focused on visual/structural part features.

Conducted preliminary user and product research to decrease risk factors and increase safety measures.

Collaborated with project leads to create/update part drawing files in Solidworks for device construction.

Carried out in house crash test simulations on products to verify and validate material and design decisions.

Utilized advanced 3D printing technology for rapid prototyping of new and updated wheel designs.

Assisted in the construction of a completed device design history file for FDA submission.

Worked in coordination with project leads at Ferno-Australia for product specifications on a new handrail design.

  • Cincinnati Childrens Hospital

At Cincinnati Children’s hospital I worked as a research assistant for Dr. Jeffrey Whitsett, MD in the Pulmonary Biology Department. Performing research allowed me to better understand the “behind the scenes” aspect of medical care. I was exposed to medical devices such as a centrifuge, micropipettes, specialized freezing chambers, and microscopes.

    Areas of Experience:

Stained and prepared lung tissue slides to be analyzed for growth defects.

Utilized widefield microscopes to take magnified images of areas of interest on lung tissue slides.

Learned lab safety procedures including cleanliness, sharps disposal, waste management and liquid exposure.

Worked with live mice in a clinical trial to collect blood and lung samples.

Utilized freezing techniques to preserve lung tissue samples to prevent damage.

Assisted in data organization so that it could be constructed in a research findings report.
